Living with visual impairment

The Erlenhof | Zentrum’s visually impaired-specific residential care facility is home to graduates who are attending a vocational IV measure at the Swiss Centre for the Visually Impaired in the Occupational Environment (Erlenhof | SIBU) in Basel. The flats are located in the immediate vicinity of the training centre. In a two-room flat or alone in a one-room flat, the residents are supported and trained in practical life activities and orientation in an unfamiliar environment as required.

Living with visual impairment

The graduates are supported by specialized educational staff in their everyday lives. Practical life activities can be retrained together under the aspect of visual impairment. The residential programme also supports the residents in “arriving and finding their way” in a new living environment and an unfamiliar city.

Due to the visual impairment, orientation in an unfamiliar place is usually more difficult and involves additional effort and time resources. The residential support service for people with a visual impairment works closely with the Counselling and Rehabilitation Department of Sehbehindertenhilfe Basel, which offers appropriate orientation and mobility training. Regular leisure activities (city tours, museum visits, cultural events, excursions, etc.) in and around the city of Basel are designed to familiarized graduates with their surroundings and promote social interaction.

In the case of minors, we look for an individually suitable accommodation option. We also offer trainee rooms for people with a visual impairment who are completing an apprenticeship or internship in the Basel area.
